Permanent hair removal and PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)

Polycystic ovary syndrome also known as PCOS, affects 1 in 10 women at some point during their reproductive years. The problems it causes vary widely: infertility and irregular menstrual cycles, acne, weight gain, hyperpigmentation in certain areas of the skin, or skin tags.

When it comes to hair, patients with polycystic ovary syndrome are, on the one hand, more prone to androgenetic-pattern hair loss and, on the other, to hirsutism. Hirsutism, which affects approximately 70% of these patients, is characterised by excessive hair growth in areas of the body that are not typical in women. These so-called “hormonal” areas are the chin, the jawline, the areolas, or the linea alba.

At Lago Aesthetic Medicine, our aesthetic clinic in Barcelona, we specialise in treating patients with PCOS, as our combination of laser hair removal and electrolysis allows us to offer a range of options to address hirsutism with guaranteed success. From diode, Alexandrite, or Soprano laser hair removal sessions to reduce the extent and density of the initial hair growth, to electrolysis to permanently remove residual hair—fine or lightly pigmented—or hair present in the aforementioned hormonal areas, where laser hair removal may cause a rebound effect and the appearance of new hair by stimulating dormant follicles. It is also important to bear in mind, given the particular characteristics of PCOS, that hair removal only eliminates the hair present at the time of treatment.

According to patients who have undergone our hair removal treatments, both laser and electrolysis, the result is doubly satisfying: on the one hand, aesthetically, as they are free of unwanted hair in highly visible and uncommon areas; and on the other hand, socially, as their confidence and self-esteem increase accordingly.
