Gynecomastia is the pathological enlargement of one or both mammary glands in males. Its main causes are excessive production of female hormones (such as prolactin), liver problems, obesity, or the intake of certain substances such as anabolic steroids or specific medications. It is a condition whose consequences are primarily aesthetic, but it does not necessarily affect the patient's health.
Gynecomastia has varying degrees depending on the extent of breast enlargement in males, but once it has developed, the only solution to reverse it is surgery.
Gynecomastia surgery is performed through a small incision in the areola, through which the mammary gland is removed or excess fat is eliminated. In most cases, general anesthesia is used, the duration is 1 to 2 hours per breast, and the resulting scar is concealed within the areola.
The only definitive solution is surgery.
